Because religion has had, and continues to have, enormous impacts on human society, culture, and history.
What is more, many of these impacts have been/are happy, healthy, and uplifting; and many have been/are awful, debasing and downright destructive.
If these don’t make religion a big issue, then, aside from science, we may wonder what else can be a big issue.
