CONNECTING WITH THE COSMOS

There are many things in the world around us: mountains and rivers, plants and trees, birds and animals, sun and moon,  sky and stars, and  countless more. We  think and reflect, and are aware of all this. This awareness, as far as we can tell, is unique to us.

Religions arose from the recognition that human consciousness is a significant aspect of the world around. Whether consciousness arose as a result of biological evolution, as current science suggests, or was implanted by an intentional Creator, as religions envision, Consciousness inspires us to consider our individual existence in the larger context of the universe. From this perspective, we reflect on how we may be linked to the larger whole. Sometimes we seek to connect with it.

This urge to connect with the cosmic whole expresses itself in a hundred ways. Ultimately, that is what prayer is all about. In the words of the poet

At the social level, most normal people feel comfort, security, and happiness in being part of the community to which they belong. When that community includes all creatures and inanimate things too, and the universe itself, these feelings are expanded considerably.

When one meditates in silent seclusion  one attempts to build a bridge between individual consciousness and the Cosmic Whole. The sheer attempt, successful or not, brings about an inner peace that calms the mind and brings an inner fulfillment that enriches one’s being.

This effort to connect with the Cosmos is implicit in every religious rite and ritual, prayer and pilgrimage.
