FAITH & REASON

Science and religion were inseparably intertwined for many centuries in most cultures of the human family. After all, both spring from the same inner urge to understand and unravel the mystery of existence: existence of a world with all its splendor and richness, and also of a mind that reflects, a heart that feels, and a spirit that experiences all aspects of life.

With the rise of what is called modern science in the 16th and 17th centuries in Western Europe,  science began to elaborate worldviews which were at odds  with long-held notions as to the nature and functioning of the physical world. More seriously, some of the findings of the modern scientific quest seemed to diverge from various assertions held sacred in religious texts.  It was as if twins who had long lived and played together in the same arena were now drifting away because one of them had discovered a richer ground to sport in. Or, perhaps it was like a married couple who  discovered at some point that they were too incompatible to stay together, thus wrecking the harmony that had subsisted between them for long.

So, astronomy, geology, and biology unraveled facts and developed visions which could not be easily reconciled with Scripture. Disagreements sometimes erupted into acrimonious confrontations.

No matter how persuasive the fruits and format of science are, it has not been very successful in meeting some of the deeper needs of the human condition, certainly not as well as traditional religions do. So, many capable and creative scientists were anchored to their faith, even if it sometimes meant accepting  positions that don’t conform to Aristotelian two-valued logic.

Thus, we have REVELATIONS from two source: FAITH and REASON.

These are explored in the Book:
