KAMBA RĀMĀYAṆAM – Transcreation from Tamil to English

PREFACE

We prostrate the Almighty

The Omnipresent Ruler of the World.

He created it and sustains it,

and eventually dissolves it,

Ceaselessly engaged in His Divine plays

No, never can I describe that elusive Divine

That  even learned sages can’t grasp nor explain.

INVOCATION

Of the three guṇas: sattva, rajas, and tamas

It is sattva that is the Divine’s nature

We ourselves will be enriched if only we can

Immerse ourselves in pure sattva alone,

By custom be say at the start and at the end

Th sacred invocation of Hari Aum.

It is only by this sacred chant

That one can be freed from all cravings

Induced by the five channels of perception,

And realize the essence of all our scriptures.

After detachment from worldly cravings

One gets attached only to Divinity’s feet:

They symbolize all Truth and the Mercy of God

That is unfailingly given to all is bhaktas.
