ALEXANDER, THE GREAT (356 – 323 BCE)

The son of King Philip of Macedonia

Defeated Darius II of Persia.

Married Roxana, a Persian princess

Tried to invade India with no success.

A  vast empire this man who ruled

By great Aristotle he was schooled.

A city in Egypt that bears his name,

Has brought him indelible fame.

ALFRED THE GREAT (849 – 1110)

Alfred was Aethelwulf’s last son.

For fifteen years he did Wessex run.

During the time of the Saxon kings

England was raided by Vikings.

He defended the country from Danish tribes

He also gave them lots of bribes.

Met Pope Leo the Fourth, learnt Latin late.

He came to be called Alfred, the Great.

AMELIA EARHART (1897 – 1937?)

Amelia nursed soldiers in World War One

Flew across the Atlantic just for fun.

She wrote books on flying, inspired women

To become pilots, exactly like men.

Amelia tried to circumnavigate,

Alas, as if by inevitable fate

Her plane was lost in mid-ocean

Bringing to end her life’s great mission.
